What happens during a lesson?
During the lessons the teacher uses hands-on guidance and verbal directions to lead the student through everyday actions, such as sitting, standing, walking, squatting, in a way that allows the student to move with greater efficiency and ease. The student may also be asked to lie down semi-supine on a table, for maximum benefit to the back and neck. The technique can be applied to all activies of life, and you are welcome to work on specific areas of interest: for example computer users may like to look at how they can work better in front of the screen, actors may practise a monologue etc.
Over time the student is able to maintain this freedom of movement outside the lessons and can quickly recognise when they are falling back into their 'old habits.' In this way the student is an 'active' participant in this process.
Prepare by:
-
wearing comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement.
-
being ready to learn. The technique is not a treatment; it teaches you how to help yourself.
-
knowing that you won't be learning excercises nor will you be manually manipulated.
-
being ready to change!
How many lessons? How often?
This depends on individual cases, the severity of their condition and the availability of the student. For beginners 1-2 lessons per week are recommended. As a general guide, a study from the British Medical Council found six lessons with gentle exercise were shown to improve chronic back pain in the long term.
