About

Stephanie Ong

I am a certified member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT), the world's largest and oldest professional body of Alexander Technique teachers.

I trained both at the Constructive Teaching Centre (London; Director Ruth Murray), one of the oldest teaching centres in the world, and Scuola Tecnica Alexander di Milano (Milan; Director Daniele Bottaro). I graduated in 2013.

I am Australian and have been living in Milan for the last two years. I had my first Alexander lesson in my teens from my mother (a qualified teacher). At the time I had mild back pain, due mostly to bad habits I developed from playing the cello. The lessons quickly fixed this problem, however I continued taking lessons on and off over the years, sometimes because of a headache, RSI (I worked for several years as an editor and writer), or otherwise simply for the pleasure of it. I was fortunate enough to start training in my twenties, while I was studying a masters in London. It helped me cope with the hours I spent in front of the computer and the general stresses involved in living in a new city and taking on post-graduate education.  For me the technique is more than just about releasing or preventing undue tension, it is about increasing awareness of how we use ourselves and the decisions we make often without realising it. I sincerely believe in the benefits of the technique and hope to share this experience with others.
